Career Milestone

McLaren Engineer Wins
Best Paper Award in Structural Hazards

Congratulations to Matthew East, PhD, for receiving the 2023 Best Paper Award in Structural Hazards from the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering!

Each year, only three papers are selected for this prestigious award across the categories of Analysis & Computation, Materials & Structural Response, and Structural Hazards. His award-winning paper, “Development of Controlled Rocking Masonry Walls with Energy Dissipation Accessible in a Steel Base,” explores the seismic performance of a new masonry wall system designed to enhance resilience during earthquakes. The system includes energy dissipation devices that are easy to access and replace, enabling quicker recovery after seismic events while minimizing structural damage.

Published in 2023, this groundbreaking research paves the way for more resilient masonry construction. Congratulations, Matthew!
