ON Stage Kaufman Astoria Studios

ONStage Open
at Kaufman Astoria Studios

The legendary Kaufman Astoria Studios has expanded its campus, putting ONStage at the center of the action. Located adjacent to the studio backlot, ONStage is a new L shaped, 4-story addition with two new ground floor state-of-the-art sound stage facilities offering 40-foot tall, 90 foot clear span soundproof conditioned spaces for film and television production. The above 3 floors offer over 66,000sf of office space.

Mclaren provided structural and geotechnical engineering services for the Queens, New York facility. Understanding the importance of acoustics and functional space, the team developed a hybrid lateral structural system to eliminate cross-bracing at the stage level. Additionally, structural steel above the stage floor was designed with rigging points welded to beams and girders at regular intervals to provide flexible attachment locations for lighting and set arrangements.

Onsite-parking below ONStage, was accomplished via deep foundations using drilled-in pipe piles to minimize structure depth and transmit building loads through poor bearing soils. The pile caps were cast integrally with the structural concrete floor slab system to minimize the depth of excavation into ground water, reducing the construction schedule and eliminating the treatment of dewatering the site.
