Coastal Engineering

Natural Shoreline Protection and Restoration

Natural shoreline protection and restoration are at the heart of sustainable coastal management. By leveraging nature-based solutions, we enhance the resilience of coastal ecosystems while providing effective protection against erosion and flooding.

Our approach integrates living shorelines, wetland restoration, and oyster reef development to create dynamic and adaptive coastal defenses. These methods not only protect the shoreline but also promote biodiversity and improve water quality, making them a cornerstone of our coastal engineering practice.

Living Shorelines

Implementing living shorelines, such as those at Ferry Point Park, to stabilize coasts and promote habitat growth. Living shorelines use natural materials and vegetation to protect against erosion while enhancing habitat value.

Wetland, Estuary, and Marsh Restoration

Restoring vital wetland ecosystems to improve biodiversity and coastal resilience. Wetlands act as natural buffers against storm surges and provide critical habitats for wildlife.

Oyster Reefs

Establishing oyster reefs to enhance water quality and provide natural protection against erosion. Oyster reefs help filter water and stabilize the seabed, contributing to healthier coastal ecosystems.

Living Shoreline Prototype

To test the stability and resiliency of a future large-scale project, McLaren Engineering Group worked with architectural design firm Ayers Saint Gross to develop a 15-foot by 20-foot prototype living shoreline ecosystem that is currently exceeding expectations at the National Aquarium’s campus in the Inner Harbor.
