Franz Sigel Park Reconstruction

Located on East 151st Street in the Bronx, Franz Sigel Park Ballfields underwent a $9.5 million reconstruction. The project included reconstructing two ballfields for both baseball and softball, and installing sports lighting, bleachers, drinking fountains, and in-ground irrigation. The design aimed to preserve the Grand Concourse historic district, adhering to rigorous NYC LPC review. The fields now feature natural turf baseball fields, and the fencing and amenities of the site were reconstructed, enhancing Franz Sigel Ballfield’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.

As a subconsultant to Nancy Owens Studio, the McLaren team provided civil, structural, and geotechnical services, enhancing recreational spaces in our vibrant Bronx community.

Geotechnical Investigations

McLaren developed and implemented a Geotechnical Investigation to evaluate the underlying ground conditions, supplying crucial information for the reconstruction and modification of the baseball fields and lighting structures at Franz Sigel Park. As there is both an existing subway tunnel and sewer main running beneath the park, McLaren had extensive coordination with the New York City Transit Authority and New York City Department of Environmental Protection throughout the project. Both agencies reviewed both the geotechnical investigation plan as well as the final design to ensure that there would be no impact to any of the existing infrastructure.

Water Resource Management

Additionally, McLaren aided in the drainage and water supply design for the ballfields and developed a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) to reduce pollutants from stormwater runoff. The reconstruction of the baseball fields aimed to address infield flooding caused by stormwater, which disrupts baseball activities for days after rain events.

Additional Franz Sigel Park Renovations

McLaren also provided structural services for the renovation of the southern portion of the existing park. This included incorporating renovated baseball fields, evaluating the existing perimeter retaining walls, designing retaining wall structures, and designing foundations for chain-link fence posts and sports lighting.
