Northwell Health’s South Shore University Hospital required replacement/upgrade of their normal and essential electrical switchgear systems. This undertaking included new switchgear on the 4th floor of the Brackett Building, on the 2nd floor roof of the Tower Building – this unit was placed within a new building enclosure, and on the 1st floor roof of the Wraparound Building – this unit was placed within the enclosure where the existing unit was removed.
McLaren Engineering Group provided structural engineering design which included schematic design, design development and preparation of construction documents for each of the South Shore University Hospital’s electrical replacement units. Units required steel dunnage to appropriately transfer their load to the existing building’s structural framing, and some of the units required an elevated catwalk surrounding them to provide safe access for maintenance.
McLaren designed and engineered the catwalk/dunnage system as well as performed a structural engineering review of the existing buildings to determine they have sufficient capacity to support the additional loads.
